My favorite bit of running kit

Lock Laces.  In the early hours of the morning when I am already considering skipping the run and going back to bed, these babies make that option a little less easy to justify.  No fiddly laces, just slip on your trainers and head out the door.

I usually buy mine from the Run 4 It website because I got my first pair from their Edinburgh store, but for those of you outside the UK they are available on Amazon here.

They save time, cost less than a tenner and come in some funky colours, what is not to love.  Plus they remind me of my childhood when elastic springy laces were all the rage!

Eat and Run - Book List

I have just finished the book 'Eat and Run' by Scott Jurek.  It is a good read and I would recommend it to anyone with even a vague interest in running.  He mentions a number of books that have influenced him but there is no book list and they can be quite hard to find so I thought I would post one here.  I have included amazon links where available, unfortunately some of the books are pretty rare and may be hard to get hold of.   The items in italics are either authors or topics with no specific book reference.  I have also listed the recipes in the book by chapter for easy reference.

A great site for free training plans

I came across this site when planning for my first half marathon.  It has a whole host of training plans for a range of distances and levels.   I used the novice 1 plan to train for the Islay Half Marathon I completed last August.

Eat, run... and be a vegan?

I am currently in the middle of reading the book "Eat and Run" by Scott Jurek the great ultramarathon runner.  It is an interesting read.  The book has a strong focus on nutrition that Scott seems to believe is the key to his ultramarathon success.  He started off as a redneck, McDonalds eating kid from what sounds like a reasonably deprived part of Minnesota and transformed himself into a vegan super athlete.

He includes some vegan recipes in the book some of which actually sound pretty tasty like the 8-grain strawberry pancakes (look out for a future post on these).   So far the book has certainly made a good case for the vegan diet and I still have a third of it to read but I don't think I am quite ready to give up cheesecake.
